Why Drupal?

Better authoring experience

Creating content doesn’t have to be a chore. Work quickly and easily from wherever you’d like. All of Drupal built-in themes are responsive, so you can use all of the admin areas from your phone. Focus on all of the details at once, or only the ones you need.

Mobile first

Build responsive sites and also create web applications that deliver optimal visitor experiences, no matter what device they’re on. Drupal supports responsive design best practices and ensures your users get a seamless content experience every time, on every device.

Fast and flexible theming

Drupal theming layer lets you create fast, secure, and flexible designs. Template engine Twig uses tag-based syntax that’s easier to learn. You can template your own language constructs, thanks to its open architecture. Debug much more easily, with clearer error messages. It’s the most complete transformation of Drupal theming in 10 years.

Better performance and scalability

Caching settings throughout Drupal are better than before and better by default. Entity caching is in core. Cache tags let you invalidate content accurately and immediately. You don’t have to set up CSS/JS aggregation, because it's already in core. Many other features like any language, mean speed, etc.

Universal configuration storage

Drupal’s configuration system handles all kinds of settings. You can export your config data into YAML files to manage it with version control. And, if you need to, you can override config data.

One hundred languages

Creating great digital experiences isn’t easy. It’s even harder if you have to use tools wrapped in an unfamiliar language. That’s why Drupal gives you 100 languages to choose from. Build what you want, with the languages you know best.

Native support for integrations

Feel free to make Drupal the backbone for the unique series of external applications your project needs. Patch records in a CRM or marketing automation tool. Post to social platforms and send email campaigns from a Drupal site. Get granular control over which resources are available and how they’re accessed.

Best Drupal features

New theme engine

Drupal includes new template engine called Twig, which is PHP-based, secure, flexible and pretty fast. For now it’s much easier to build multi-functional and beautiful websites using Twig.

Mobile First

Now Drupal is mobile first out of the box. All the built-in Drupal themes are responsive, including an admin theme that adapts to various devices with different screen sizes.

More HTML5

In the real world HTML5 is the de facto standard when it comes to compose web markups. Now HTML5 is natively available in Drupal, giving you possibility to use different advanced HTML5 tags and its behaviors, and even more functionality and compatibility using different devices. All themes and core components use HTML5 markup out of the box.

Multilingual out of the box

Drupal boasts extensive multilingual features right out of the box. The admin interface has built-in translations. You can also create localized pages with translated blocks and views. Translation updates from the community are automatically facilitated.

Configuration Management

Drupal has own configuration management built into core. You can use a version control system like Git to manage of configuration changes. Configuration data can be stored in files, so it's easy to export and import website settings for modules, themes and particular website elements.

Easy Authoring

New Drupal features bring unprecedented abilities to Content Editors, with WYSIWYG editor now included into core. Content Editors can edit text on any page without having to switch to the full edit form thanks to new Quick Edit feature. Also Drupal has new feature which helps create different Editorial Flows from drafts to live, which is pretty useful for editorial teams.

Views Now Part of Core

Module "Views" is mostly frequently used for a long time, so basically it's a main part of most website projects, and a lot is pretty much impossible without it. Now, Views is part of Drupal core. It gives very flexible capabilities for displaying content, building different front elements like sliders, accordions, carousels, lists of content items, etc.

Better Accessibility

Drupal has excellent support for industry standard accessibility technologies, like WAI-ARIA. ARIA Live Announcements API and TabbingManager are significant improvements in Drupal now, which provide control for rich Internet applications. Bells and whistles like better font sizes, tweaked color contrasts, autocomplete widgets, and modal dialogs go a long way towards making Drupal the best tool in its segment.

Built-in Web Services

Drupal now makes it possible to use itself as a data source, and output content as JSON or XML. You can even post data back to Drupal from the front end. Hypertext Application Language (HAL) is implemented in Drupal and makes exploitation of web service capabilities less painful.

Fields Galore

Drupal ships with bucket-loads of field types in the core, thus taking its content structure capabilities up a notch. New field types like entity reference, link, date, e-mail, telephone, etc., aid content creation, and now you can attach fields to more content types, as well as create custom contact forms by attaching fields to them.

Guided Tour

The Tour feature provides guided tours of the site interface via tooltips. It can be used to guide the user through a workflow or draw users' attention to critical components of the interface, especially those elements that might not be immediately obvious. This feature makes Drupal much easier for everyone to understand.

Loading Speed

Drupal caches all entities and data objects. When a page is viewed, its content doesn’t need to be rebuilt again. Previously viewed content can be quickly loaded from the cache. Once configured and enabled, caching is completely automatic.

Big Pipe feature

With Big Pipe part of Drupal core, developers can optimize the site load performance for the end-user significantly. While this feature has nothing to with actual performance and is only perceived, it’s a great feature to have since the end user is able to see a difference in site load times.

Industry Standards

Drupal aligns with the latest PHP 7 standards like PSR-4, namespaces, and traits, and uses outstanding external libraries like Composer, PHPUnit, Guzzle, Zend Feed Component, Assetic to name a few. Meanwhile, underlying Drupal features modern, object-oriented code that’s the order of the day, by Symfony 2.

Cammie Croft, Business about Drupal

Cammie Croft, U.S. Department of Energy, Senior Advisor

To make matters worse, I discovered that the Energy Department had lots of outdated digital technologies. I sought a solution that would be able to scale and adapt to many requirements. I wanted a solution that would empower the Energy Department to evolve and develop as quickly as our users’ needs.
